Classifying and Retaining GT Data

A couple of very important steps should be taken before a document or electronic file is destroyed or deleted due to data retention requirements, audit requirements, litigation, annual reports and other potential requirements and reporting obligations.

Before deleting or destroying, follow the links below to review the supporting resources.

GT Data Classification Guide

To become familiar with how Georgia Tech classifies specific data used to conduct Institute operations, review and become familiar with the GT Data Security Classification Guide.

BOR Records Retention Guide

To understand how long a document should be retained as required by the Board of Regent's (BOR), review the BOR records retention guidelines.
Records Decision Tree

The Records Decision Tree was designed by the Library Archives and Records Management department to assist employees to determine if a document or electronic file should be deleted, destroyed, or archived.

After reviewing the classification handbook, retention guidelines, and decision tree, and still have questions regarding a document, contact Kirk Henderson at kirk.henderson@library.gatech.edu for assistance.
