Discarding Hard Drives & CD/DVDs

 

To discard a hard drive follow these procedures

  • Use the Secure Delete tool available under the Resources tab to securely delete all data from the drive.
  • Contact the Building Managers for your building so he or she can obtain the correct box and label from the Georgia Tech Recycling Department.
  • The Facilities Manager will coordinate surplusing the drive by sending it to an outside contractor for grinding.

 

To discard CDs & DVDs containing sensitive data follow these procedures

  • Use a heavy duty shredder that is capable of shredding CD/DVDs
  • Bring your CDs, DVD, and other removable media to the Iron Mountain truck on Jan. XX, 2008 for on-site secure shredding.

Caution:

  1. Do not mix shredded CD/DVDs with shredded paper if you are recycling your shredded paper. The GT Solid Waste Management & Recycling Department will not accept mixed items.
  2. Do not throw CD/DVDs containing sensitive data in the trash before destroying the media.
